It happens Everywhere

Even outside of the academic world bullying is a constant threat. The targeting for bullying in this case is somewhat different than in school. Generally in schools the targets are the loners, the people who stand out, and the people who are easily vulnerable. In the workplace this is almost the exact opposite. Since higher education is one step towards getting a degree and eventually a career I find this information to be very valuable.

Who is targeted?

Generally the target in the workplace poses as a "threat" to the person doing the bullying. The bullying is fueled by jealousy. Targets are generally more technically skilled than their bullies. Targets are also usually better liked, they have good social skills and they are emotionally intelligent. Targets are ethical and honest.

The Solution

The solution to bullying (as captured in Work Doctor's Blueprint for Workplace Bullying Prevention) emphasizes factors that are in employers' control. The issue needs to be adressed to the management or to the human resources department. Once this is done the bullier should be adressed and dealt with acordingly.
